You gain points by posting and by people giving you rep for being helpful in the community or you lose it by people voting your rep down for being not helpful or a spammer or something. Basically it's a way to show that you're someone who participates a lot and who gives out good information. Down the road I'm sure I'll tie it to some contest or something, but for right now it's just a gauge as to how helpful and "respected" you are.
