Most any other car club/group organizes, then cruises a nice scenic drive, gets lunch, etc. etc.
You ought to organize an annual San Antonio (and surrounding areas, i.e. austin) 240sx meet, greet, and cruise, sponsored by Smoke 'Em Motorsports of course

any certain day or month, that you are wanting to do this? Like I said i am down but just need to know when so i can get the day off from work. Also i know some people from texasnissan has been wanting to do another annual meet so you could let them know over there on what you want to do. Here's an idea how about a road trip/cruise to Corpus and then a cookout on the beach? If not there are some places here in san antonio that would work also

If that's the case then you guys should have it right at the beginning of spring break, since ALOT of 240 owners are college and other school kiddies

just throwin this out there since you mentioned spring break, what about some kind of "cruise to the coast" where after the main cruise everyone is already at the beach and can go surf, drift at the bull ring, etc..

That's exactly where my recommendation is heading. Due to the bull ring owner's relation to the red roof inn people could get cheap rates there, they could drift, surf, bbq, etc. etc. and you know the bull ring dude (I wish I could remember their names) would be more than happy to go out of his way to help ya'll do that I bet, hehe, he seems more than a little desperate for business

I didn't see them as desperate for business. I saw them more looking to expand the use of there track what fun is owning a entertainment facility if its only used saturday night? I think they love the new vibe and community that comes with drifting there isn't all the no I won't help you with your car you might beat me kind of stuff that goes on with stock cars... for the most part the drifting community is open and willing to help each other. I think it'd be a great idea to end the trip down in Corpus Christi.

Yeah that's for damned sure, it's most similar (imho) to the auto-x community in that respect, at least on the amateur/novice level (that applies to both auto-x and drifting). That's what makes it so easy/fun to get into legally. But still, he seemed almost too eager to cater to our group, especially when he clearly has quite a bit to learn, not to mention 90% of the other people at the track had no idea what drifting was and most seemed to think that a circle track was the only thing people drifted on (that was really, REALLY weird). Overall I think underneath it all he sees this as being able to bring in more revenue (from both drivers AND spectators) than simple stock car racing ever could and he's trying as best to exploit us while not screwing us as possible. Though from an economic and driver's standpoint I personally believe he'll quickly find out how un-feasible his current business plan is, at which point he'll either get smart and adapt, if he truly cares about the drifting community, or realize that his plans of drifting being a huge cash cow are moot and give up entirely. It would take him, at his current planned pricing structure and given texas' drivers track record for attendance, even when adjusted for the increased possible numbers such a low-entry fee would bring, at least a decade if not more to make back the money the track alterations we talked about that day would cost him, let alone talking to who I assumed was his wife, they already have other plans in the works to fix up the track including a need to replace some apparently non-working stadium lights and re-paving the existing track. I don't know how it will all play out, it would be beautiful in a utopian-esque world if everything that was said that day could happen and go down precisely like that, but I don't see it happening that way at all. My best comparison point would be Aaron's monthly mineral wells events, which also hold a relatively cheap price tag ($45 entry last I checked, and now $200 for free entry the whole year, which would mean $17/event) incredibly awesome amounts of seat-time and freedom, very much akin to our day in corpus, only with no worrying about damage from walls and a much larger and more interesting track design, comparatively. Not to mention at Aaron's you can generally find experienced drivers who will help coach and judge you, mass amount of cars at once tandem runs, and towards the end of the day he sometimes (from what I remember) changes the course up according to drivers demands. Yet even with all these mass benefits they have an incredibly low turn-out there. The only thing that could (POSSIBLY) help mr. bull-ring is free tires for drivers. That is the sole bottle-neck between drivers and event attendance, and if an equitable and marketable solution could be found by a person/organization, then, and ONLY then would the possibility for amateur drifting events to become a mildly profitable venture exist.
Just my 2-cents, please discuss, and also, don't misconstrue, I really don't mean to invite flames or what not at all, just a quick jot down of the things that I've been contemplating since the corpus event and I'd really like to see what other people have to say along the same lines about everything.
Oh yeah, thanks for reading my non-sense

I have my ideas about his business plan as do you and I tend to think it is not based solely on drivers and spectators in the sense that you're thinking. It is based on sponsorships and concession sales. Which means the decade it'll take to repay the repave the track or new S-turn would be severely cut down. He's selling wall banners and car sponsorships solely based on turn out from his stock car races. Michael (the owner) has been in the game a very long time on our side and has seen a lot more things then any of us as far as events and organizations. Smoke Em Motorsports is going to do a lot of work down in Corpus thanks to Michael's willingness to open his track to our sport. No one else is doing it that's why Aaron throws events on a huge parking lot with cones that lets people throw a car sideways and not worry about damage. The walls aren't as dangerous as they look as you, Carl, Quan and Charles showed by not hitting them. The spectators don't know that so the show is a LOT more entertaining to them. I'm not sure though who at the event didn't know what drifting was considering most of the stands, but I welcome the fact that new people are getting introduced to this sport which is having a hard time getting built up in the south. I think that will change if more places like circle tracks and road courses open up to us and they will as time goes on.

Indeed, after all the drama with the whole neverslow/dailydrifter fiasco I was forgetting the fact that tracks, and venues for all sports in general do receive quite a bit of revenue from sponsorships, which is in turn weighted by the amount of spectators they average per week, month or year, but even then, I imagine (though I have absolute zero basis for knowing because I don't know the pricing structure) that amount is minimal compared to what concessions (which I was including in my model as profit from spectators) and drivers/spectators entry fees bring in. I do indeed hope it pans out out there, but I don't know how often I'll be going back until they get some kind of turn in there that I can get some practice on. That wall, from my standpoint, is just incredibly too scary to be worth it for the track layout (i.e. an oval). If they pave the in-field, do their research on drifting, and start setting up some good stuff out there, I'll be the first to go, lol, but until then I can't see risking my car on that track on a risk vs. reward basis. I think Aaron himself put it best in a post I read, I can't remember where, when talking about his experience with circle track owners. It was in response to one of us posting trying to drum up drivers for corpus, he pretty much predicted everything that the guy said/did and even the way other people reacted and the whole appearance of everything. I don't see circle tracks becoming a big venue source for drifting in the future, I think the focus instead is going to be more on race tracks and parking lots. However once he paves that infield with some turns, at that point I wouldn't consider it a circle track anymore, in my mind at least, I imagine I'd rate it right up there with some of the local (i.e. houston/dallas/college station) tracks in Texas. In any case you guys have to let me know how things turn out on the 9th, I wish I could go and support ya'll at least, but given the circumstances previously mentioned, I'm kinda stuck, lol. Best of luck to you guys!!!
hey, fix your 240 dude....I wouldnt want to drift a $30xxx+ car on a bank with walls either....
I respect everyones opinion but mine is who fuckin cares...cheap seat time is cheap seat time...the more the better

werd, I'm not giving up on them, I'll definitely support 'em to help ride it out and see what happens, because the possible payoff ($25 entry fee to bi-weekly track events) is just too cool to not give them a chance, lol.
