Hi. new to the site, scene, and area. i am moving to Albilene texas and this is the first time that i will be near any type of ameture drifting events. where i used to lived they would occasionally come through with pro events and occasoanally an autocross event. i havent had the money to actually participate but with my new job i am going to get involved. right now i drive a 2003 hyundai tiburon GT Auto. yeah it sucks but it gets the job done (in the snow). if anybody knows a reliable car dealership with decent cars i am looking.
Props go to.

1. Find dealer.
2. Find dealer w/ late model SC
3. Trade Hyundai
4. Have no payments and possibly cash left over
5. Suspension
6. Practice.
yay.

there are only three cars i would prefer to have if i were to get serious about drifting.
RX-8, RX-7, AE86, 240sx, 300z, 350Z thats about it i wouldnt know about anything else honestly maybe and this is a big maybe a old honda nothing agianst them they just dont appeal to me.
travis

dont get a rx8 the motors blow up. i have seen those motors laying around the mazda dealership next to where i work. if any thing buy a 350z good suspension motor stock just get one with a vlsd not a open. if you cant shell out a grand for one right off the bat. you wont find an ae86 at a dealership and if you do and tried to trade in your car for one they would laugh you off the lot. your best bet is for a 350z or a genesis when they come out. but the nissan dealerships with want to get rid of 350z as soon as the 370z comes out so you might be able to cut a sweet deal. or just spend so coin on a 370z which are the same base price as a 350z right now.
thats just my buck fifty

wait and get the Genesis...they are bad to the fuckin bone!!! just saying cuz im in Korea right now and they are already out here, i got a chance to drive it.....SOOOOOO FUCKIN BADASS!!!!!!
just saying........it might be worth it...OUT!
WELCOME BTW!
Welcome! Don't buy an rx8! Save and buy a 240 on the side or just get a z.
metalr169
12-23-2008, 09:30 AM
that wouldnt be so bad. the problem is all the tuning and upgrading is a little above my level in auto mechanics i really need a begginer car not only to drive but to work on to.

then stay away from the rotories on your list, and new cars. most of us have a 300 dollar shell with all the money in the motors and suspension...
just dont be so quick to drop your daily...
anyway welcome to the forums, the mineral wells events will be a great place for you to learn. HUGE lot, with nothing but people to hit, oh and cones but they dont scream.
I'm really really sorry. You drive a tiburon and you live in a town with nothing to do. Lulz.
Keep the tiburon as a daily and just get a shitbox 240.

if you arent good in the mechanics side of things buy a 350z with a vlsd that way you dont have to put in any money to start drifting 240s are great but alot of the s13 chassies are high mileage cars with worn out chassie s14 arent to bad but there are alot of people who drift 350z daily drivers low miles on the motor just maintain it if you do go that route

quick question does anybody know of any air force on this forum. also i found an old beat up 240 that i like. also is the fox body mustang something to look into there are alot of them and i like the style the give.
travis
12-24-2008, 06:14 PM
drift society is in the army but i dont think anyone here is in the air force i like fox bodies most people dont but i would stickwith a 240 outta the two
Kevin
12-24-2008, 06:34 PM
i agree with travis on staying with a 240, but i do have a friend who had a 91 5.0 mustang and he could drift the shit out of it. it was a 302 with headers, msd ignition shit and mufflers and man he could tear it up. but 240s are a bit lighter than the 5.0 and you'll prolly get shunned if you get one but its up to you ;)
travis
12-24-2008, 08:46 PM
i would have to say though 302 motors are very good motors just dont think of putting one in a 240 :)

the thing i am worried about i guess is that with getting a 240 everybody just talks about changing motors and adding mods to it like its nothing swappping an engine is hard right.

ummmmm, i think pulling and swapping a motor takes us a couple hours max. if you have a nice wiring harness like charles then it takes like 30 minutes to pull the engine lol. it really isn't hard at all and if you need help there are plenty of people on here who have experience pulling, wiring, and installing motors
Kevin
12-25-2008, 01:40 PM
yeah its not very hard at all. i actually just swapped my sr20 in 2 weeks ago. it took 3 days but we screwed around alot and would work on it at night when everyone was off work. but its pretty easy, just kinda pull it out, plug the new one it ha
Cattman
12-25-2008, 02:30 PM
my swap took 3 months and two days. 3 months of going maybe we should put that thing in there and 2 days of going man we should have done this sooner.

12-25-2008, 05:26 PM
yea, and kevin's was done in his apartment garage with very little room and no power tools for the most part. the fact that his car was slammed and there was almost no room in that garage was the reason it took so long to get everything going. well that and a couple flywheel bolts broke.
metalr169
12-26-2008, 12:42 PM
okay how hard is it to get ahold of a engine then i here you guys talking about all htese model engines i have no idea what you are talking about. diffrent sizes mean diffrent mounts and stuff right wouldnt that require alot of custom work.
Kevin
12-26-2008, 01:59 PM
ok well if your meaning the sr20 its the japanese engine that originally went into 180sx's(240) and silvias. they are everywhere on the internet but you take a risk when buying one. take corey for example. he bought an sr for about $1700 and dropped it in without looking at it or anything. he started it up and didnt make it down the block before that shit blew up. but if you go with an sr a good idea to do is to pick it up and break down the simple things to look at to make sure that shit aint gonna blow. i lucked out so far and got a motor that has been apart before so i really didnt have to do much. but a couple good websites to look at is JDMENGINECORPS.COM and JHOT's ebay auctions.

12-26-2008, 04:26 PM
what about turbos and transmissions.
Cattman
12-26-2008, 06:16 PM
they usually come with the sr20.
metalr169
12-26-2008, 09:26 PM
hm well i mean like for a drifter whenever i see drifting videos they have diffrent shifters and it looks wierd plus is a turbo a good thing for a newbie wouldnt i have to adjust to the turbo winding up.
Kevin
12-27-2008, 12:11 AM
haha the turbo winding up! na a stock sr comes with 7lbs of boost and most likey a tranny. you dont have to touch it at all when you drop it in. well from the looks of this whole intro, it seems to me that you should definently pick up a 240 but keep it ka for a while untill you know whats up with the car. i wouldnt just hop straight into an sr if i was you. but thats just what i think ;)
Dont get ahead of yourself! I wouldn't even worry about doing any kind of swap or anything for awhile. Find a 240 that runs decently. Have the differential welded and put some lowering springs or coilovers on it. Then when you feel a little more comfortable with the car and outgrow the stock motor, move up to the sr20 or something else. You don't have to do anything to your car starting out to learn(except for the differential). I've had the stock motor with minor mods in my car for most of the time I've been going to events and it works just fine. I have now outgrown it and am ready to move on.
It will either
A: take forever to finish if you dont know what your doing
B: take you longer to learn to drive because of the added power

you mean weld no if you know how to weld then its not weld the spider gears together and then to the case make sure you clean all the gear oil off use at least three cans of brake clean ps this is the first post from my new phone yay

ima air force dependeant and so is emilio , why do u ask
and whats wrong with juss getin the sr? ive never in my life worked on a ka . cept for a water pump and thermo , ive only owned a ka for 2 months , when i first moved to texas ,
get online read about the engine , the sr is very very simple if you have a lil money there nthn wrong with it , or upgrade ur suspension

ok guy heres the plan.
step 1: buy a 240, hatch or coupe who cares
step 2: weld the diff
step 3: learn to drift
its really that easy. just do it ;D
metalr169
01-01-2009, 02:12 AM
if its really that easy why isnt the sport bigger. (also i understand its exspensive. parts and equitment are important but all i hear when i watch and talk to drifters is tires, tires, tires and tires are never cheap.)
After you get your car the way you want it buying tires isn't so bad. But if you own a 240 it's never done LOL

all motorsports are on a downward spiral now, even NASCAR and F1. I believe what kevin meant was getting into the sport isn't hard, getting good at it is
HeisLegend.
01-03-2009, 04:17 PM
I think you ask too many questions. No offense.
who cares if it's not as big as you think or if this or that or that or blahh blah.
You know what you want to do right? Get into the sport somehow, correct?
Buy something that you can throw some suspension mods on and that's RWD and relatively cheap and go from there.
Questions will be answered as you go along.
Also, use google. It's fucking awesome when you want to know things.
The internet is your friend.

okay okay i get it i just dont want to spend a grand on a car i might outgrow or that is to complicated or that has a history of breakdowns the two that you guys have led me to is the old model corrolas and 240's both are relitivly cheap and easy to work on.
you will NEVER outgrow an S chassis and they are retardedly easy to work on once you learn your way around em.
mazdarati
01-04-2009, 05:33 PM
old model corrolas and 240's both are relitivly cheap and easy to work on.
its all relative to who you talk to. if you talk to 240 guys they will say that a 240 is easy to work on. If you talk to Carolla guys, they will say that they are easy to work on. It comes down to what you want in a car. both would be great cars to learn on. The majority of people who drift drive an S chasis for a good reason. its one of the most balanced cars out there and it has loads of potential for modification because just about EVERYTHING has already been done.
just learn on a 240 and go from there
see, we've even got our resident mazda guy to like s chassis. mwahahahah I shall corrupt them all!
mazdarati
01-04-2009, 05:48 PM
i just said they are easier to modify, i didn't say i liked them more. rx7's look way better anyway ;D
but s chassis run better, only because they run
mazdarati
01-04-2009, 07:22 PM
unless the s-chasis is sitting in a drive way without a motor, ZING! ;D
HeisLegend.
01-04-2009, 09:56 PM
They're right.
S chassis cars are pretty easy to work on. The only reason I didn't want to own one anymore is because they're getting like hondas. Yeah, plenty and cheap, but now they're more desireable and people are stupid = thieves.
When I had my SR car I always thought someone would jack it when I came up to SA.
AE's. Well, those are bad little ****ers. Just way too old though. If you're really ready to get deep into a project and replace an elephant nutsack worth of shit, go for it.
IMO, get a newer car from your trade in. It'll last longer, be a daily driver and a weekend warrior. I don't know if you want to ride around on coilovers though. I don't mind it, personally. Plus, you'll have nice paint and a pretty car. haha.
Whatever you decide to do, just have fun.
Cattman
01-04-2009, 10:14 PM
or if your not running s chassis car is allowing 3 other s chassis run because it became an unwilling parts whore.
look dude stick with your most economical choice. i dont mean fuel economy and shit i mean. cash outta pocket. the less you have to shell out for an reliable and running daily/warrior, the better off you'll be in the long run. nothing is impossible to work on once you know wtf is going on.

01-05-2009, 01:15 AM

if its really that easy why isnt the sport bigger. (also i understand its exspensive. parts and equitment are important but all i hear when i watch and talk to drifters is tires, tires, tires and tires are never cheap.)
so thats why you make friends with people who work at Discount Tire so you can score deals on new tires and get used ones for free. plus you only put expensive tires on the front and you can run shit tires on the rear for like a fraction of the price.
Jakins
01-05-2009, 01:01 PM
