I've been dickin around with this thing for awhile and can't seem to get the timing right. When I shoot the light and put it at 15*btdc it runs like crap. I've tried re-stabbing the CAS and still end up with the same results poor throttle response slow revving. After looking at the jim wolf cam install writeup I began to question the position of the cams. IIRC it said the dowel on the cam for the intake should be at the 12 o'clock position and the intake dowel should be at the 10 o'clock position. I removed my valve cover today and set the crank at TDC via 2nd notch on the crank pulley and it appears that my intake cam may be off by a bit. Here are some pics maybe you guys can tell me. Just FYI the cams and head have been off so it is possible that I didn't install them right.

Jim WOLF pics

NOTE THE DOWEL PIN LOCATIONS
INTAKE = 10 O’CLOCK EXH. = 12 O’CLOCK

its also possible that the timing could have been knocked off even by 1 or 2 teeth at the bottom when the head was off. when ryan had the BC cams in his it would run like shit no matter how it was timed. the only thing we could figure is that it probably needed a tune even though numerous other people on the forums said they were direct drop in.

if im not mistaken those pics from jim wolf on the litle squares dont matter , your supose to like the shaded links wit the dotted cam cprocket , so when you put the cams on , it should be tdc , and you match the links wit the sprocket , then you should be at tdc tighten it down , start and time with gun

It is hard for me to see from your picture but it appears you may be a tooth off on the intake side. Make sure you line up your colored links. Incase you dont know there are 2 silver links and 1 gold link on the chain. You should have 20 rollers between dots on the intake and exhaust gears. Check here http://www.rezlo.com/Pages/FSM/Files/S14_SR20DET_FSM.pdf recheck the CAS while you have that valve cover off aswell.

they should matter because they don't change their position relative to the dot on the sprocket. even if you line up the dots with the colored links on the chain it could be off at the bottom which would throw everything off when you tried to put it at TDC. the only way to check without pulling the whole thing apart is pull the pans off and verify that the chain is where it needs to be at the bottom as per the FSM. me and ryan have been through this numerous times and its not fun >:(

if i recall, the mark on the chank should be one tooth over to the right from the bottom tooth if you are looking at it from the front at TDC

I believe it is 3 teeth from 6'oclock. I was gonna recommend pulling lower/upper pan and verifying the bottom sprocket but thats a bitch. Just make sure your good up top and go from there. If it runs acceptable then your probably okay down below, if not....have fun. you need a mirror, flashlight, and patience.

Look at EM-24 or page 61 for the timing specs

yea I did it up right like mazda said I counted the links and it was dead on. I finished around 3. I drove it down the street and man it feels so much better than before. It actually moves now haha...I also gained some more vacuum because before it read 10 at idle now its 20 :D.

they are stock , he had his head cleaned and when they put the cams on they put them in off, thats why he had to fix that , no aftermarket cams
