One thing i havent seen in this forum,so i figure id bring it up,aftermarket and stock, what can aftermarket ecu's offer, what is it that i should look for when looking to buy one,and as far as stock ecu's what kind of software do i need to tune them, and how far can you tune a stock ecu,and how? I dont know something ive been thinking of since i got a new hp mini...this lil thing is badass....

AEM EMS or Power FC. nothing else really mentionable. expect to pay $$ for standalone.

rom tunes are a waste of time as well as safc + various other piggy back systems.

Hold the phone there buddy you forgot a few standalones brands (Haltech,Electromotive TEC3,MOTEC)..... Just because you haven't heard of these doesn't mean they don't offer the same quality and performance.

And FYI ROM tunes that are specially tuned for your vehicle by road or dyno can offer great results... I'm not talking about an bullshit enthalpy or jim wolf I'm talking about a tuned based off real data logs. You don't always need some baller setup for the most basic BPU's.

I will admit SAFC and other piggy back systems do suck as they merely alter the signal(lie) that the ecu reads rather than provide factual information not to mention some are known for dropping tops out of no where (cough e-manage).

And to answer the OP's question Standalone ecu's are nice because they allow tuners full control of fuel/ignition maps. They also offer greater resolution which allows for finer tuning adjustments compared to the OE unit. Rom tuning offers similar functionality of a standalone at a fraction of the cost however there are limits to how much you can adjust/compensate. Rom tunes are only good for mild setups where all you need is slight adjust in order to accommodate larger injectors or perhaps a different MAF sensor.

A good example of a properly running rom tuned car was Ameens KA-T s13 Stock motor t25 & SR 370's. It ran for an entire season with little hicups and it stayed together despite the torture it was put through.

be careful, you may endanger your manifold by doing so.
