So when hunting down a black top motor for a swap. How do you ensure what type of black top motor it is? I seem to recall seeing an older sr20det black top that only made something like 180hp. How would you ensure you're getting the newer 250hp one?
Lets pretend an online seller had one and doesn't know exactly what model year it came from. Is there a way you can tell wiht a few good pictures?

S13 Blacktop T25 203 Crank hp (Cheap_redtop even cheaper...)
S14 Blacktop T28 VCT 220 crank hp (moderately priced)
aka notch top aka slant top
S15 SR VCT T28 ball bearing 245 crank hp (expensive; weak tranny)

All i have to say is if a seller doesn't know much about the motor don't buy from him. One of the best places i can think of to get a sr is the sr20 store he test the motor ecu maf ect. You will pay a little more for it though, But spending that kinda money wouldn't you like to know the shits gonna work.

Thanks for the info guys. I've been wanting to drop an s15 into my s13 for awhile. This will definitely help me select the right engine.

O.K. so lets say you have an s14 up against an s15 swap. Both with harnesses and ECUs. Now what is the pain about the s15? Please be specific.
I can imagine how a skyline swap would require a lot of attention, but what are the main issues with the s15? And how hard is it to keep street legal?

the fact that you need to replace the entire rear end in the swap aswell unless if you use a 5 speed tranny. check out that thread it has tons of info.

Nismo makes a trick six speed tranny with treated gears and closer ratios now. I guess it would be cheaper to burn through old five speeds though.

ok soo the 6speed doesnt have a speed sensor in the tranny so you have to put in the hlsd in the back so you can get your speed reading but you also have to have the s15 gauges too. besides that its the same thing. so if you swap a 5speed on to the s15 then its the same swap as the s14

That's what's cool about the nismo unit. It has a plug in the tranny for the s13 speed sensor.
Aside from the bell housing.(5 speed) Any major issues?
